AUF CALLS FOR ADOPTION OF MOST COMPELLING ANTHEM
"LIFT EVERY VOICE" IS CORRECT ANTHEM FOR AFRICAN UNION

The AUF is calling for the acceptance of "Lift Every Voice" as the official anthem of the African Union. The AUF recognizes the lyrics of the old hymn as being the most profound of the anthems available to the African Union. "Lift Every Voice", more than any other anthem, reflects the depth, wealth, and power of the African experience.

When the protocols of ratification of the African Union finally came into effect this year in Lusaka, Zambia, the delegates did not choose "Lift Every Voice", even though there are cogent reasons why it is rightfully African in every sense of the term (and not just African-American as some people like to claim).

The Lusaka Summit accepted the OAU anthem as the AU anthem for an interim period of time, until a more appropriate anthem and flag can be found. As far as the AUF is concerned that search is over, and "Lift Every Voice" is the correct African anthem.

Dan Kashagama, General Secretary of the AUF, said he was concerned about the opaque concetual imagery of the OAU anthem, especially the phrase "flesh of the sun, flesh of the sky". The OAU anthem "is less compelling and has less real flesh than Lift every voice", he said.
