17 March 2004
Live Satellite Broadcast of AU Parliamentary Session

The Inaugural Session of the Pan African Parliament will be relayed live across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Most of the TV and Radio stations have had crews in Addis Abeba since the beginning of the week. The Parliamentary Session and some of the news activities surrounding the event will be held in the UNECA building beginning at 7 GMT on Thursday, 18 March 2004.

Broadcast stations in the United States of America, the Caribbean, East Asia, Central and South America can access a live satellite feed at 335.5 Intelsat channel 1A. Contact ETV [Ethiopian Television] for arrangements to access the Intelsat live feed. The number for ETV is 011 251 1 52 6614. The contact person is Mr. Habte Gemeda, Head of the Department of Commercial Production at ETV.

In Canada none of the broadcasters will be carrying the entire transmission live, however, the complete event will be telecast by CPAC sometime later. A live broadcast of the entire session in Canada was too expensive, because the Intesat footprint covers the Middle East and Europe and requires routing the live signal through New York.

The details of the CPAC (Canadian Channel 69) broadcast times for the Inaugural Session of Parliament will be posted on the AUF website as soon as they become available. Otherwise, we expect the event will be reported on during regular news on other Canadian and US Channels.

This website will carry all the major developments during the event, shortly after they happen, specifically the names of the President and Vice Presidents as soon as they are elected, as well as a complete list of the Members of Parliament as soon as it becomes available.

The weather in Addis Abeba on Thursday and Friday will include showers, with clear sunny skies beginning at noon on Saturday, the last day of the Parliament's Inaugural Session. Rain is a sign of good fortune. Minimum temperature will be 8C and maximum 21C, so rather mild to cool. Air traffic at both international airports (Bole and Lideta) will be more than usual, and same goes for downtown traffic especially in the southern part of the city.
